Eli's Mug

A woman waits for a first date at her usual café, her nerves fraying when he doesn't show. But the barista, who knows her order by heart, has a secret that could change everything.
Lila picks at the edge of a napkin, the word 'Eli' scrawled on it in her shaky pen. It's 10:02, and the café's bell hasn't jingled in five minutes. She'd told herself this wouldn't matter—just a coffee, just a chat—but her thumb keeps brushing the scar on her wrist, a habit from the last time she'd hoped too hard. She wants this to stick.
Javi, the barista with the silver hoop earring, sets a water glass down. His knuckles graze her hand. "Still waiting?" he asks. She nods, staring at the napkin. He's memorized her order—oat milk latte, extra foam—since she started coming every Saturday. Today, she'd arrived early, wearing a dress instead of her usual hoodie, and he'd paused mid-pour, his eyes soft. Now he lingers, wiping the counter even though it's clean.
10:15. Lila's phone stays dark. She stands, napkin crumpled in her fist, when Javi clears his throat. He's holding his own phone, the screen bright with a dating app profile. The name: Eli. The photo: him, six months ago, with a beard and a hat, but the same scar on his left cheek. "I changed my picture last week," he says, voice rough. "Didn't think... you'd be the one."
Lila sits back down. The napkin unfolds, 'Eli' still visible. Javi's ears are red. "I almost didn't come," she admits. "Thought you'd see me in this dress and..." "I saw you," he says. "In the hoodie, too." He reaches under the counter, pulling out a chipped mug—her mug, the one he sets aside for her Saturdays. He pours the latte, foam spilling over the edge.
Steam curls between them. Lila wraps her hands around the mug, warm as a heartbeat. The bell jingles, but neither looks up. "You still want to stay?" Javi asks. She takes a sip, the oat milk sweet on her tongue. "I think I do," she says. The napkin flutters to the floor, but 'Eli' stays, faint and clear, under her shoe.
