1
I think one of the most important parts of maintaining living
2
more minimally is just paying a little bit more attention to the things that might be repeat purchases.
3
When I sat down to write this video, I realized there were quite a few things
4
that I used to keep spending on that I ultimately wish I had stopped buying much sooner.
5
I know at least a few of these are going to be highly relatable
6
so hopefully you and i both find comfort in knowing we're not alone in this
7
here are things i wish i had stopped by years ago as a minimalist but first
8
if you're new to my channel thank you for stopping by here we talk about minimalism frugal living tech
9
and things of that nature so if that sounds good to you
10
and you end up liking the video be sure to like
11
and please book the subscribe button a hotel in raccoon city let's get started the first thing is clothes
12
that look good on other people.
13
I don't know if it's just me but one of the things that would
14
completely sell me on an article of clothing or an accessory is
15
when I would see them be worn by a character I liked in a show
16
or game and it would lead me to have the very bold assumption that it would look just as cool on me.
17
It's like the epitome of the expectations versus reality meme.
18
It was a few of those purchases that ultimately made me realize taking inspiration from things I like is fine,
19
but inspiration is much different than straight up copying.
20
When I think about the money I spent on clothes just to try and replicate a look that I admired, it was usually not ever worth it.
21
And I know I just would have had a lot of headaches saved if I stopped doing this sooner.
22
Besides clothes, I definitely recommend considering if a lot of purchases
23
that you make are completely because of how they look or seem to compliment someone else's life, without thinking about how it would actually work for you.
24
The next thing is things only because they were on sale.
25
I think I need to emphasize on buying things because they were on sale.
26
My personal weakness would be the eShop.
27
And now that I think about it, pretty much all electronic storefronts have some sort of tab that says deals.
28
And I'm sure that exists because a lot of people exclusively shop on those tabs, feeling like they're getting some sort of small win whenever they buy something from there
29
and they just feel more inclined to do it.
30
This is something I wish I had addressed sooner
31
because it really just led to me having an extensive backlog of things I bought
32
because they were on sale and I thought I might get to them one day, which in some cases that day never came.
33
But I've also seen it happen at places like Publix that always does buy one, get one for items I would never use.
34
And I would try and create some scenario in my head where it would just make sense to buy that buy one, get one free item.
35
Once I learned to stick to only making intentional purchases over just taking advantage of a sale,
36
I found myself not exploring spending as some sort of fun activity and looking for sale as an opportunity.
37
The next thing is cheap versions of what I actually want or need.
38
I can start this by saying I absolutely know there's oftentimes
39
an affordable high quality alternative for something I genuinely need
40
but I've learned the hard way many times
41
that going with the cheap option for something I need has cost me more money over time.
42
The example that always comes to mind first is
43
when I bought the same cheap tripod three times over before just pulling the trigger on a high quality one.
44
I really don't know why I do that to myself.
45
And another example is I would buy crap tier coffee
46
that would honestly taste bad unless I added a ton of cream and sugar.
47
And I share these two examples because yes, as a minimalist, I want to be mindful with my money, but cutting corners isn't a good thing
48
if it's something that's going to negatively impact my routines and especially things that I look forward to.
49
Things that require a lot of upkeep.
50
Every purchase comes with some sort of time commitment in some regard.
51
And many times there are other things that come along with an item rather than just the item itself.
52
One of the things I really think about
53
when considering a new purchase is how much work is going to come along with just owning
54
that thing a couple videos ago i mentioned how even having a small plant requires some sort of commitment
55
but something i didn't mention last time
56
and i often wouldn't even think about is how frequently a
57
new item can get in the way of something i use much more than
58
that new item if that makes sense that sounds super broad
59
but it It simply means if I'm going to grab something out of my backpack every day, for example, and I have a bunch of crap in there that I use less frequently,
60
I'm constantly having to move through it.
61
I know that sounds super nitpicky, but when there's zero friction getting to the things you need, it's kind of nice.
62
It's not like those items even take up a lot of space all the time or require upkeep, but even so, they need to be stored somewhere whether I'm using them or not.
63
It might sound like I'm chronically overthinking even the smallest of items, but the overall point is,
64
I wish I took this into consideration years ago when making a purchase.
65
Organizational products.
66
Easily one of the biggest traps I fell into when I first got into minimalism is this subculture of organizational products.
67
And while there's definitely situations where can make sense.
68
I found that for me they would just delay an inevitable declutter and just hide the stuff I don't need or use.
69
It's ironic
70
because for the longest time I had this black binder where I would keep my important physical documents
71
which were literally two pieces of paper.
72
So in a way it was an overcorrection to something that wasn't even a problem.
73
To store two thin sheets of paper I had this large binder that had to get stuffed somewhere.
74
It's really a double-edged because on one hand I love being organized with the things I do have
75
and it drives me a little crazy when my stuff's all over the place.
76
But the difference now is I'm not sold on needing an assortment of bins or containers to help me stay organized.
77
The next thing is backlog items.
78
I know I touched on this briefly earlier, but after thinking about it, it definitely can be elaborated on.
79
And if you're unfamiliar what a backlog item is, it's just something I'll purchase with the intention of getting to eventually.
80
I think it's a term more used when it comes to like games, shows, or books.
81
I used games as an example, but I recall doing this with book purchases I would want to get to eventually, and honestly even clothes sometimes.
82
Ultimately creating a stockpile of physical or digital belongings,
83
I would likely never find the time to get to and eventually lose interest in.
84
If I had realized this was happening and stopped it sooner, it definitely would have saved me money and space physically and digitally.
85
And the thing I found to be the most effective, at least in regards to books, shows, and games, is to stick to just one at a time,
86
at least one of each if you can narrow it down, and finish one in each category until completion.
87
I've honestly even thought about making a spreadsheet for each of these categories, books, shows, and games, just to keep track of what I've finished throughout the year,
88
but we'll see.
89
Other things like clothes or even a kitchen utensil can be looked at the same way.
90
Something I want to get to eventually, I want to wear or use eventually, I just don't know when.
91
Clearing my backlog, finishing one thing at a time, and knowing what I realistically want to
92
and have the time to get to was just the biggest help
93
and I really wish I had paid attention to this years ago.
94
I could probably make an entire another list to add to this video, but I really felt like these were the most important
95
and effective when it came to maintaining an intentional lifestyle
96
and I hope you found at least a few inspiration from these points.
97
Anyways, as always, I appreciate the time you spent here and I appreciate you watching.
