1
Allah made this religion travel almost every culture on earth.
2
Every culture on earth.
3
And it's incredible that wherever Islam traveled, the Quran traveled with it.
4
The French read the French translation of the Bible.
5
The British read the King James translations of the Bible.
6
Right?
7
The Italians have an Italian translation of the Bible.
8
The Spanish have a Spanish translation of the Bible.
9
The Indonesian Muslims, the Bangladeshi Muslims, the Senegalese Muslims, the Moroccan Muslims,
10
the Chinese Muslims, the Australian Muslims.
11
What are they reading?
12
The Turkish Muslims, the Albanian Muslims.
13
What are they reading?
14
The Arabic Quran.
15
The history of Islam is proof that Allah made this Quran easy in a way
16
that every culture on earth was able to not only learn but teach their children to this day. To this day.
17
It's one of the most amazing qualities of the Quran.
18
That it can be learned by anybody.
19
Anybody.
20
And at any age.
21
You're watching just a short clip from our longer deeper look of Surah Al Muzzammil.
22
This full series is now being released exclusively on Bayina TV, featuring a very deep dive into the Surah's key themes,
23
verse by verse breakdowns and lessons, which you can now watch on demand via your mobile or on the web,
24
or even cast to your living room TV now and watch with your family.
25
We're done with the technical part.
26
Now we get to the juicy part.
27
Oof.
28
And Allah decrees and calculates the night and the day.
29
قَدْر also means to set a limit.
30
قَدْر comes from قِدْر, which is a giant cauldron or a pot that contains something.
31
Allah creates the containings of the night and the day.
32
Allah creates the calculations of the nights and the days.
33
Allah puts limits on the nights and the days.
34
He put limits on his rizq.
35
He put limits on his rizq.
36
So Allah puts a limit on the night and the day Beautiful phrase Why?
37
Because now Allah is saying Some nights are long and some nights are short Is that true?
38
Winter nights, very long Summer nights, very short And in Europe, there are places that don't even have a night
39
I'm getting really short
40
Short circuit But there's something else going on here
41
The night of the Prophet And the night of the believer Are they the same?
42
No The day of the Prophet And the day of the believer Are they the same?
43
Allah mentioned Taifatun min al-lazeena ma'ak A group Each member of the group Has a different day
44
And a different night Yes or no?
45
That is also In a very holistic way Allah didn't just say
46
That he has made calculation Of the night and the day And decreed the night and the day
47
He's also decreed everything That goes on With each individual in the night And with each individual in The day
48
And so some people are able to pray more sometimes
49
And less sometimes Or not pray at all
50
And that's part of the decree of Allah Some people have
51
a night shift at a hospital They're a nurse in the emergency
52
And they have a night They can't pray at the hajjad They're stopping somebody from bleeding to death They can't pray
53
There's somebody that's busy
54
There's somebody that's studying for an exam Until 3am Because they have an exam at 7am
55
They're not going to pray at the hajjad Or maybe that's the only time they'll pray at the hajjad
56
But the ayah is actually now It's talking about Allah
57
But by talking about Allah It's actually talking about How much variation Allah has created In the lives of people
58
And how different their days and their nights are
59
How different their burdens are How different their capabilities are How different their opportunities are
60
Some people have more free time Some people have no free
61
time Some people are busy Some people are not Some people
62
have a job Some people are unemployed Some people are healthy Some people are sick Variety
63
But all of that is included Kind of packaged in In Allah decrees the night
64
and the day And that's why you see a logical progression from here
65
Allah said something even more beautiful After introducing us to this concept Allah then says
66
And Allah knew That you are not going to be able to count it exactly Ya Allah,
67
you told us Half, a third, two thirds Little less, little more And at the end of all of
68
that you said I already knew That you do not know how to count this
69
Exactly The word تحسوه comes from إحساء إحساء comes from حسات
70
حسات are pebbles When the Arabs had a hard time counting something
71
Then they used pebbles And they put them in a jar Okay, one, two, three, four So now it's an exact count
72
The modern version of a mihsat Or a counter Is if you see
73
People don't use cash anymore And if you're in the cash business Then you're shady But anyway
74
When you go to the bank And you're depositing a huge mound of cash They have that cash machine Right?
75
That's the mihsat now That's the tool that counts exactly
76
Allah says By using the word أَلَّن تُحْصُهُ You're not going to be able to count the times exactly.
77
Also Allah is saying you're not going to be, Ibn Ashur takes another route in this.
78
He says this is actually isti'ara, meaning the amount of sajda, the amount of tasbih, the amount of dua.
79
You're never going to be able to keep track of how much you did and how much you didn't do.
80
Not just the duration of night, but how much zikr you did and how much is it worth.
81
You can't calculate any of that.
82
That's beyond your ability.
83
But then ihsa also got used in the meaning of something else.
84
It started getting used in the meaning of ability.
85
Which is even more interesting.
86
Allah is now talking to the rest of the Muslims.
87
Look at this beauty.
88
Allah started with the Prophet and a special group that is with him.
89
Ta'ifatun minal-lazeena ma'ak.
90
But now he's talking to everybody else.
91
So there's a special group that gets up for qiyam
92
and they once or twice they miss it or maybe half the time they're there, something.
93
But then there's the rest of the larger Muslim population that isn't exactly...
94
I mean, they're struggling with Fajr.
95
They're struggling with Asr.
96
Right?
97
Now Allah turns to them and says, I knew that the rest of you weren't going to be able to keep up with this.
98
You weren't going to be...
99
You're not capable of doing all of this.
100
And after all this emphasis on this ibadah, there's kind of a guilt that settles in, Ya Allah, you emphasize qiyamun layl so much,
101
and I've lived so much of my life, and I've only done qiyamun nahar.
102
Right?
103
I haven't done anything.
104
I've done niyamun layl, not qiyamun layl.
105
Right?
106
I've been sleeping at night I don't do qiyamun layl I feel really guilty Allah says I knew
107
Most of you can't do it فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ
108
So he accepted He turned back to you lovingly Now tawbah usually means repentance
109
But tawbah means something else too When Allah turns back to you with mercy
110
So here actually it means When Allah turns back to you with mercy Like Allah knew you couldn't do it
111
So Allah turned to you Mercifully And made things easier for you
112
So the tawbah here is Allah turns to Now Allah is turning to the one Who is not as good
113
At worshipping him
114
Because Allah already mentioned people
115
that are very good At worshipping him in the middle of the night They give up their sleep
116
and they get up
117
and they pray Now Allah is talking to people Starting with I know you're not very good at this A'li ma'lantuhsoohu
118
And they're already The moment Allah says I knew you're not capable We're like I'm a loser
119
Allah says fataba alaykum but he turned towards you.
120
He mercifully turned towards you.
121
He accepts your shortcoming.
122
It's okay.
123
You don't have to be guilty about it.
124
فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ And then he says, فَقْرَؤُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ Just read whatever's easy for you from the Qur'an.
125
Whatever's easy from the Qur'an.
126
Now one interpretation of that, according to some of us, this is for the day five prayers.
127
That the five prayers are I will disagree with that interpretation
128
Because that's coming later on in the ayah If they're coming together They mean two different things
129
But I will tell you what this is suggesting It's suggesting those of you
130
that You're like half the night A third of the night Two thirds of the night I can't even imagine
131
Allah says okay I know you couldn't do it But I encourage you to start somewhere
132
And he's still It's already clear that it's not mandatory
133
So the ayah has already made With the words It's already clear
134
That none of this is mandatory
135
But now Allah is giving spiritual encouragement Remember the previous ayah said
136
And when you take a journey You have to take one step
137
So Allah says Okay here Let me help you take one step What's that one step?
138
Just recite مَا تَيَسَّرَ Whatever comes easy From the Qur'an من القرآن
139
I don't know Allah I know That's it Okay Just recite that That's easy for you You can do that Okay
140
Then just recite that
141
And so Allah has now Opened the door For people
142
that are Spiritually way behind
143
And first he started By telling them Look I know you're behind And right now You couldn't get to those numbers
144
You know You can't get to a half, a third, two thirds you're not there
145
but that's okay I accept your tawbah I'm turning to you anyway lovingly
146
but I encourage you to read and then instead of setting a number what's the standard? whatever is?
147
easy
148
but now we have to spend a little bit of time
149
talking about ease I'm going to use the exercise analogy again
150
okay I want you to run as long as it's easy for you
151
How do you know How much you have to run
152
The moment you start running out of
153
Breath Okay so everyday I just want you to run As long as it's easy
154
Isn't it guaranteed That after a week You're going to run longer Isn't it So it became easier to run longer
155
Because the standard was Do so much that is
156
Easy The only way you will know what is easy Is the moment you hit hard
157
That's the only way to know
158
Right So by saying do whatever is easy for you
159
It's as if Allah said Yes he's going easy on you
160
But he also wants you to grow So he said put yourself through it
161
And the moment you start having difficulty The moment you start yawning
162
Or your legs start giving And you just feel tired
163
Okay just get back and finish the raqa Finish the prayer It's okay
164
That's not for you Or you got too sleepy Or you just thought Okay
165
Next day Next day Next day What's gonna happen naturally?
166
It's gonna increase naturally Like Allah has given us A development program In the words
167
And your stamina will build naturally And the thing is Not everybody's stamina Builds the same way Right?
168
And not everybody has the same capacity And now you're like
169
You know I prayed yesterday Let me give you the workout analogy again
170
Sometimes you're doing exercise And you have to leave
171
Like you got a call from work
172
Or you got a call You were 70% done with your exercise And you had to leave What do you feel?
173
You feel like Oh I needed to finish that Forget even psychologically Even physically your body feels like something's missing Why?
174
Because you didn't get to your limit You didn't go at the edge of what's easy Right?
175
If you're used to running for 30 minutes on a treadmill
176
And you got a work call And you have to get off the treadmill in 20 minutes Something's off
177
Something feels off So what's going to happen when you get in the habit of praying?
178
And then you used to do shorter
179
And you started doing a little longer Then a little longer Then a little longer Now it's like
180
I've been praying For like two weeks now
181
I feel Something's missing I need to do more I think
182
I need to Memorize some more surahs I need to go from Like You know Surah Al-Asr To maybe
183
If I had to do I had to do
184
And after a couple of days Maybe I need to go
185
Maybe I should push myself Let me try I don't know Maybe I can do Surah Al-Mulk
186
Maybe from Mulk Maybe I'll end up in I don't know Dukhan Yasin Yasin Can I do Yasin Let's see.
187
Yasin to Kahf.
188
Kahf to Baqarah.
189
I mean, if you think about Baqarah right now, you're crazy.
190
Right now it's just Ikhlas and Asr.
191
But, Allah didn't say get to Baqarah.
192
Allah just said, Faqra'u Ma'tayasara bin al-Qur'an.
193
It's so amazing.
194
Just take a little step.
195
Take a little step.
196
But then there's a new problem.
197
Ya Allah, okay fine, start from somewhere.
198
There's a new problem.
199
The new problem is, Ya Allah, I have a night job.
200
Ya Allah, I have such an exhausting job during the day that by the time I get home
201
and I even look at the pillow, I go into a coma.
202
I barely wake up for fajr.
203
Even this faqra'u ma tayassara min al-Qur'an is too much for me.
204
I can't do it.
205
Even this is too much.
206
Right?
207
Even the act of getting up at 3am or 2am Even that's too much for me.
208
I have too many responsibilities through the day and too much going on that physically I'm just not able to get up.
209
What do I do?
210
Right?
211
Allah says So Allah says, now let me just show you.
212
Fine.
213
He knew that some of you are going to be sick
214
Some of you are going to be physically incapable
215
Some of you are not strong enough to even wake up
216
Some of you are on medication That's drowsy medication
217
And knocks you out for 8 hours And you have to take the medication Does that happen?
218
There are people that have to take medication There are people that have to take medication That lowers their blood pressure
219
There are people that have to take medication That just completely knocks them out
220
There are people that need A certain amount of sleep medically They can't do it
221
There are people that have a physical disability They can't get up
222
They can't pray They have severe back injury They have something or the other
223
Allah knew that there are some people Who can't even do what I just said
224
So amazing Now they're supposed to feel bad, right?
225
Because first we were feeling bad that we didn't make it to the half or two thirds or one third.
226
Allah said, no, no, don't feel bad.
227
Just do whatever you can.
228
So long as it's easy for you.
229
Then a group among us starts feeling even worse.
230
I can't even do that because I'm sick.
231
But he's going to mention three groups.
232
There's another group that is going around traveling all over the place.
234
يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ means striking in the land meaning instead of saying yusafirun
235
or yarhalun yadribuna fil ard is isti'ara it's for darb darb actually means to strike
236
so meaning they walk so far their feet feel like
237
like they're yadribuna fil ard
238
they go long distances exhaust themselves to make the to do
239
the work to work on the farm to work in the
240
well to work wherever you know they have long commutes they're stuck in traffic all day they're These people.
241
And they're pursuing the favor of Allah.
242
يَبْتَغُونَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ And what does يَبْتَغُونَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ mean?
243
They pursue the favor of Allah.
244
What is the favor of Allah?
245
The immediate meaning is رِزْق.
246
The immediate meaning is رِزْق.
247
They're trying to make a living.
248
There's somebody driving an Uber all night and then working in a store all day.
249
There are people like that, aren't there?
250
How are they going to ever...
251
They barely get any sleep.
252
There are people that have two jobs three jobs they can't they can't survive
253
if they don't do that they barely get any sleep
254
they don't have the luxury of going to sleep
255
and then waking up in the middle of the night
256
and then they can't do it there are people
257
that have such exhausting jobs 16 hour jobs 18 you know 17 hour jobs
258
or they have their their drive to work is two hours
259
and then the job
260
and the drive back is two hours they physically can't do
261
it they're not able to do it that's a lot of people isn't it
262
that's a lot of people now Allah is describing all the people who unfortunately couldn't do Qiyamun Layl
263
let me add a little bit to the
264
so you understand something beautiful about the fadl of Allah I said means rizq like Allah says it in Surah Al-Jum'ah
265
But the fadl of Allah has another dimension When a believer does business, makes a living
266
Then the believer is an honest believer
267
The believer is an honest salesperson The believer is an honest
268
doctor The believer is an honest construction engineer The believer is an honest government employee
269
So there's one less corrupt person in the industry There's one less corrupt business person There's one less corrupt sales person
270
And because you're doing things You're not acting in a way that's corrupt The business itself has Allah's blessing in it
271
Has the fadal of Allah in it
272
And that blessing isn't just limited to you It actually spreads You're creating a ripple effect by you doing right
273
Within Allah's pleasure in your workplace
274
You're actually generating more good
275
Just by being at work Because you are not part of the corruption You're part of the purification of the economy
276
Just by your existence in the economy This is also the fadl of Allah
277
And by you doing right You have actually now created Maybe you're a business owner
278
I particularly like the example of business owners
279
Because if they're doing something right They're doing the halal way of running a business
280
Then they have employees And they're doing right by their employees
281
And now they've created an opportunity For several families To earn a halal living
282
And all of that fadl Goes back to the one who created the business
283
So even them working all day At the restaurant And laboring and all of that
284
They're actually also getting the fadl of Allah Not just in the dunya sense
285
But also spiritually Allah has actually made this a spiritual exercise too
286
So the one who was sick lying in a hospital bed all day, can't even get up.
287
Feels like I can't do anything.
288
And the one who's working hard says, I'm just pursuing dunya.
289
I have no spiritual outlet because I'm always lost in the material.
290
I'm incapable.
291
And then Allah mentions the third group.
292
And there are people who are at war.
293
They're fighting in the path of Allah.
294
They're at war.
295
And if they're at war, then maybe they're sustaining injuries.
296
Maybe they're standing guard duty all night.
297
Because somebody has to guard the camp.
298
Right?
299
Maybe they're fighting all day So they need as much rest as possible
300
Because they need their energy to recuperate For the battle the next day Maybe that's the case
301
So they can't pray So these are three different scenarios What does Allah say about all three of these scenarios?
302
He says You also read whatever is easy From it It's so beautiful That Allah did not restrict that To qiyam
303
The ayats before were about Qiyamun Layl.
304
Now Allah is saying, it can include Qiyam, but you know what?
305
While you're lying sick in bed, While you're traveling on your camel all the way in the desert,
306
going to this business meeting, When you're driving the Uber, When you're sitting in the store,
307
When you're walking from one class to another on campus,
308
When you're taking a lunch break between surgeries Faqra'u ma tayasra min al-Quran The Quran,
309
the spiritual engagement You're fighting in battle You're just taking a break And what do you do?
310
Faqra'u ma tayasra min al-Quran Allah says Because the point Remember the point wasn't the numbers?
311
Remember that?
312
And now what's the actual point?
313
Remembrance Remembrance
314
And so Allah made it even more easy At least do this
315
And even then not too much Whatever is easy for you
316
You'll also be walking from one class to another Saying
317
318
Man I should probably learn more Quran Because this was a 20 minute walk
319
I mean I could keep repeating it But I also want to learn some more
320
You know what You're tayassar Remember I told you the ease will get
321
bigger and bigger and bigger
322
right so you'll just keep فَقْرَؤُمَةَ يَسَّرَ فَقْرَؤُمَةَ يَسَّرَ and so the Quran became a natural part of the believer's spirituality
323
whether they are capable of standing in the middle of the night or not
324
Allah mentioned groups that feel that they can't and Allah acknowledged them notice the opening of this ayah
325
your Rabb knows your Rabb knows you're sick
326
Your Rabb knows you're a full time student
327
Your Rabb knows you have a night shift Your Rabb knows you have two jobs
328
Your Rabb knows you're taking care of four kids You barely get any sleep
329
Your Rabb knows you're taking care of a baby You can't pray Your Rabb knows, your Rabb knows, your Rabb knows And then to all of you he says
330
Just read whatever you can Have Quran in your life Just have Quran in your life
331
This ayah is This ayah actually raises another question But I don't even know how to read the Quran What about me?
332
I'm French I don't know how to read the Quran I'm German I don't know how to read the Quran
333
My parents never taught me I just became Muslim two weeks ago I don't know how to read the Quran
334
So could you make it even easier for me?
335
Can I just like read a translation In French or German?
336
Could that be My personal response to that Allahu A'lam Is that Allah made this religion Travel
337
Almost every culture on earth Every culture on earth And it's incredible That wherever Islam traveled The Quran traveled with it
338
The French read The French translation of the Bible the British read the King James translations of the Bible right?
339
the Italians have an Italian translation of the Bible the Spanish have a Spanish translation of the Bible the Indonesian Muslims,
340
the Bangladeshi Muslims the Senegalese Muslims, the Moroccan Muslims the Chinese Muslims the Australian Muslims what are they reading?
341
the Turkish Muslims, the Albanian Muslims What are they reading?
342
They have the Quran
343
344
The history of Islam is proof That Allah made this Quran easy In a way
345
that every culture on earth Was able to not only learn But teach their children to this day To this day
346
is one of the most amazing qualities of the Quran
347
that it can be learned by anybody anybody and at any age
348
do you know when Islam first spread
349
and as it was spreading to non-Arab regions all the new Muslims were all adults
350
majority were adults and they were all learning what?
351
Quran You're not the first new Muslim To learn the Quran
352
New Muslims learning the Quran That have no background in Arabic Has been going on
353
For centuries and centuries and centuries This is not a new problem This is an old thing But you know what?
354
The Muslims understood something
355
If Allah is saying Read whatever is easy from the Quran Then we better make sure
356
That we make it easy for our children to learn it
357
We make it easy for an adult Who didn't know to learn it We need to make education of the Quran
358
the reciting of the Quran, the memorizing of the Quran, the understanding of the Quran, easy.
359
And Muslims have been doing that since the birth of Islam.
360
But now, after all of that time, we have the audacity and the laziness to say, it's too hard for me.
361
Really, in the age where you have more learning tools than ever in human history, you have more resources than ever in human history,
362
people would not people would how long would they travel to
363
even get a copy of a book a copy of a book right
364
and now you have not just a pdf you have the
365
book turned into an app with flashcards with voiceovers where you can tap
366
and it can recite it for you you have
367
so many tools now that couldn't have been imagined by the people before the idea that it's hard for me is
368
A lie
369
because you never Tested where your ease Comes to an end
370
remember I told you you cannot Say something's hard for me until you've actually done Whatever is easy
371
and you can't Know what's easy until you hit what
372
Hard you didn't even begin And you said it's hard for me
373
You didn't even begin How are you saying it's hard for you
374
And by the way it could be
375
that you ended up with a bad Class or a bad teacher or a bad
376
Resource and it didn't work for you But does that mean you've exhausted every possible resource and every possible avenue.
377
Human beings are ingenuitive.
378
If you really want to figure something out, you'll figure it out.
379
You'll find an outlet.
380
And the people who want to turn to Allah, Allah will never leave them without a resource.
381
Never.
