1
In this day and age, it's very easy to pirate video games.
2
You can just download them on the internet.
3
But it wasn't quite so easy in the late 70s and early 80s.
4
If you wanted to pirate video games for your Atari 2600, you had to be a little bit more creative.
5
An Atari cartridge consists of a ROM chip that stores all the game data, and that's it.
6
It is just a ROM chip and nothing else.
7
So if you were to clone the data to another ROM chip, you'd effectively be duplicating the cartridge entirely.
8
So let's say you were to clone it to a new ROM.
9
Now what?
10
You need a way to play the cloned ROM on your Atari.
11
So what people would do is they would homebrew one of these.
12
This is an EEPROM reader cartridge, and these were super, super commonly made back in the day.
13
You build one of these by removing the ROM from an official Atari cartridge and putting a socket in its place.
14
So all you gotta do is you drop your copied ROM into the socket, pull the lever, stick it in your Atari, and away you go to play all your pirated 2600 games.
15
Although if you're interested in pirating Atari 2600 games nowadays, you can just get one of these.
16
It's way more practical.
