Hey, it's David and I want to talk about focusing on what it is that you really want.
2
and the importance of this the usefulness of this in your life and the practice of it.
3
The thing is, most of us really are not focused on what it is that we want in our lives.
4
Now we are focused.
5
which is not on what it is that we really want
6
so what are we focused on well typically the default for us almost everybody And this is quite natural and Understandable.
7
It's to be focused on safety.
8
safety.
9
So the nervous system that's the default setting we have It's only focus ever He's on safety.
10
and in order to do
11
that what it's going to do is look around your life look into your environment
12
and it's going to seek out problems problems that you need to avoid.
13
problems you need to fix Things you need to get rid of, things you need to change.
14
with the ultimate goal of being safety.
15
Now, don't get me wrong, we need the nervous system, it's a very important thing, it has a very important function, is to feel safe.
16
certainly wanting to feel safe.
17
is something that's you know good to focus on but it's more like we're avoiding danger.
18
That's what the nervous system is doing.
19
The nervous system doesn't care really about anything else other than safety.
20
It doesn't care about any of the higher goals that you might have in your life.
21
It doesn't care about meaning, purpose, creativity, connection sense of freedom,
22
doesn't care about any of that and nor should it really, it's not what its job is.
23
All it is there to do is to avoid danger.
24
So it focuses on it all the time and that's where we find ourselves focusing most of our attention.
25
on problems in our lives.
26
Now it's very difficult to stop that entirely, right?
27
But what we do with focusing on what it is that we want It's basically about attuning into our needs.
28
need for freedom, need for abundance, need for creativity, need for meaning.
29
and focusing more on what those things are, focusing on what it is that we want.
30
And again, the challenge in it is going to be that the default setting will always look towards problems.
31
So the practice is about recognizing that that's the way it works.
32
that the nervous system will do that
33
and making space to make sure that we are focusing actively on what it is that we want.
34
And this is a daily thing that we do.
35
What is it that I truly want?
36
It's not about what I want to go away, what I want to stop.
37
I want the anxiety to stop.
38
I want to stop being stuck in a job that I hate, I want to stop being broke, I want to get rid of the debt that I'm in, you know, all these problems that we have.
39
I want to stop this horrible relationship.
40
I want to stop the arguing.
41
All those things.
42
well what do we want if we assume for a moment that those things don't exist anymore.
43
What would I be focused on?
44
What is it that I want in my life?
45
Now there can be psychological blocks
46
that stop us from doing that there can be limiting beliefs that stop us from doing that also
47
to the point where if I feel
48
you know if anyone feels I'll never be in a loving relationship I'm not worthy of love.
49
- Yes.
50
Well, it's going to be very difficult to convince yourself to sit down
51
and focus on finding and experiencing genuine connection and real love.
52
So part of our job is to Bring awareness to those limiting beliefs.
53
But the bigger thing that I'm focusing on here today is, okay, assuming maybe we've done that work and we're letting go of a lot of that stuff and we're questioning it.
54
It's focusing...
55
through a practice of what it is that I want in my life.
56
Do you want more money?
57
That's fine.
58
There's nothing wrong with that if that's what you want.
59
If you want greater health, if you want fitness, if you want great relationships, If you want deeper connections with people, if you want to be more creative,
60
if you want to have a sense of purpose in your life.
61
That's where we focus.
62
our attention.
63
on what it is that we want.
64
I know it sounds incredibly simple, But remember, What you're up against here is the default system.
65
The default system is to focus on problems.
66
OK, and that which is quite natural.
67
But the problem is it breeds anxiety.
68
because The thing is the nervous system is never going to take a day off.
69
Really.
70
It's never going to say...
71
he's fine now she's fine now she doesn't need any more of this focusing on dangers
72
If there are no dangers in our lives, It will actively seek them out.
73
And we know this because there are no saber tooth tigers anymore.
74
but we're all focused on different problems it's not like it's gone away or
75
Evolution has designed the nervous system to be constantly focused on the environment for problems or danger.
76
Now, how.. what would this look like, this practice of focusing on what you want, if you want to sort of override some of that overly protective nervous system that's constantly looking for dangers all the time.
77
Well, it's a practice, and you could start by writing it down.
78
What is it that I want in my life?
79
and challenge yourself to be a little bit ambitious with that, maybe a little bit unrealistic with that.
80
Because the default, sorry, the limiting beliefs won't allow you to think in terms of what it is you really want.
81
but you write it down and you focus on it.
82
you allow yourself to think on those terms.
83
What is it that I want for my life?
84
And if you do it for...
85
Two minutes?
86
a day, that's great.
87
If you do it for 5 minutes, it's great.
88
If you do it for 15 minutes a day, it's great.
89
but the more that you are focusing and focusing on what it is you want instead of avoiding danger
90
the more peaceful we will feel, the more tuned to our own needs we will feel,
91
the more motivated we will feel the more alive we will feel.
92
So this is a daily practice, an invitation to start incorporating this into a daily practice of inner work that you might do.
93
and Thank you.
94
realize that you might say, well, I've tried that before. which is very common.
95
So what probably happened there is the limiting beliefs
96
didn't allow you
97
to entertain it for too long or the nervous system overrode that decision to focus on what you want
98
and it brought you back into focusing on the problems.
99
I'm certainly not saying that you avoid the problems, right?
100
If there's a problem and it's right there in your mind and it's sitting with you all the time and
101
you certainly look to it and you certainly inquire into it to try and let it go.
102
It's not about denying anything.
103
And also by the way,
104
focusing on what you want is not a form of positive thinking You don't even have to try and believe it necessarily.
105
You don't have to try and manifest it necessarily.
106
All you're doing is allowing yourself to be honest about what it is that you feel.
107
what you really want.
108
And that does, I think, tend to move us in the right direction.
109
at least now we know, we've been honest with ourselves about what it is we want.
110
and don't let anybody tell you that something that you want there's something that you want in your life
111
and it's not the right thing.
112
If you want more money, people will say, "Well, that's not very spiritually evolved." It's like, well, Maybe that's part of my process.
113
of spiritual growth is to focus on this.
114
Maybe blocks around money or something.
115
or If you want to get into better shape, people might say that that's vain.
116
Don't let anybody tell you that whatever it is you want is is.. not the right thing.
117
It's right for you if you're if you're resonating with it emotionally, that's the right thing for you to want.
118
and very rarely are you going to find when you're attuned to what it is you really want
119
I want to go out and get wasted tonight and drink.
120
17 beers or something, right?
121
that's probably not what you really want.
122
what you really want will
123
won't have a
124
a conflict in it but you'll resonate with it in your entire body at least for a moment
125
and then the limited beliefs might come in and it might look a little bit more grey or ambiguous.
126
but you resonate with it in some level.
127
And then it's like, well, okay, what's getting in the way of me being able to sit with that desire, that thing that I want in my life?
128
And just focus on it.
129
Don't try and believe it.
130
Don't try and do anything with it.
131
Just allow yourself to be around it.
132
And I think nature will take its course.
133
I think that will have a positive effect on you emotionally.
134
and will facilitate you taking action going after it much more than focusing on problems all the time.
135
So, The invitation from this video is to set that as a part of your inner work.
136
is to have a practice where you're constantly, daily focusing on what it is that you truly want for yourself.
137
And I doubt anyone regrets doing that investing that time in that.
138
So you could put it that way.

Context & Background

In this enlightening video, David discusses the significance of honing in on what you truly desire in life. He highlights a common tendency among people to concentrate primarily on safety and problems, rather than actively pursuing their ambitions and dreams. David explains that our nervous systems are wired to focus on avoiding danger, which often leads to a fixation on issues that need to be resolved. This video serves as a reminder that while recognizing problems is essential, it is equally important to shift our attention to what we genuinely want to cultivate in our lives—be it creativity, freedom, abundance, or meaningful connections. This shift in focus is framed as a daily practice that can lead to a more fulfilling life.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
