In this next session of videos I'm going to concentrate further on the basic tools

that you need as an engineer and give you the words

that you need associated with these tools or that you use with these tools.

Files.

We use files to smooth rough edges.

To smooth means to make something flat or even.

Rough is a surface that is not flat or not even.

We can say to file something.

I am filing something.

I have filed.

Hacksaw A hacksaw is a fine-toothed saw,

principally made for cutting metal.

Fine-toothed saw is a saw with many small teeth.

Principally means the main or most important.

A hacksaw's main use is for cutting metal.

And here we can use the word hacksaw as a verb. To hacksaw something.

I'm hacksawing a piece of metal off.

And I hacksawed something yesterday.

Taps.

A tap is used to cut a female thread.

an internal thread of a nut.

A thread is the high line that goes around the inside of a nut

and a nut is a piece of metal

that has a hole through it so

that it can be screwed onto a bolt or a screw

and we use the verb to tap for this to tap a thread.

I tapped a thread.

Dies A die is used to cut the male or the external thread of a bolt.

The thread here is the high line

that goes around the outside of a bolt or a screw

and a bolt is a piece of metal that has an external thread so that it can be screwed onto a nut.

Here we normally use the verb cut and we talk about to cut a thread or cutting a thread.

Reamers.

We use reamers to enlarge holes or for removing burrs.

enlarge means to make something larger or bigger we use the verb to ream

when we use a reamer we might say something like this

hole needs reaming out burr is a rough area on a piece of metal

that is left after the metal is cut or drilled

and to take the burr away we use the verb to deburr so we might say this hole needs deburring

and then you can use a reamer
