This is the new 3D printer emoji.

Well, it could be if this official application gets accepted.

Every year the mysterious Unicode consortium accepts suggestions for new emojis, and last year my submission was rejected, probably because it was too overly specific.

So I decided to try again by stripping the concept down to its very basics.

And this is what I came up with.

I hate how other 3D printing icons use a 2D side view to represent something in three dimensions, or show a literal 3D printer that isn't really doing anything,

so I fixed that with the squiggle.

It completes the three-dimensional aspect of the cube, it makes the icon look dynamic as if something is actively happening, but it could also represent filament,

welding, a laser, thread, or any other fabrication technique.

And that's why I didn't actually call this the 3D printer emoji, I called it the fabricator, so it can represent anyone who's making anything, not just 3D printing.
